چکیده

"Magnetic clouds" (MCs) are a subset of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) characterized by e n h a n d magnetic fields with an organized rotation in direction, and low plasma p. Though intensely studied, MCs only constitute a fraction of all the ICMEs that are detected in the solar wind. A comprehensive survey of ICMEs in the nearEarth solar wind during the ascending, maximum and early declining phases of solar cycle 23 in 1996 2003 shows that the MC fraction varies with the phase of the solar cycle, from 100% (though with low statistics) at solar minimum to 15% at solar maximum. A similar trend is evident in near-Earth observations during solar cycles 20 21, while Helios 1/2 spacecraft observations a t 0.3 1.0 AU show a weaker trend and larger MC fraction.

Role of coronal mass ejections in the heliospheric Hale cycle

[1] The 11-year solar cycle variation in the heliospheric magnetic field strength can be explained by the temporary buildup of closed flux released by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). If this explanation is correct, and the total open magnetic flux is conserved, then the interplanetary-CME closed flux must eventually open via reconnection with open flux close to the Sun. In this case each CME wil...

Coronal mass ejections and magnetic flux buildup in the heliosphere

[1] To test for magnetic flux buildup in the heliosphere from coronal mass ejections (CMEs), we simulate heliospheric flux as a constant background open flux with a time-varying interplanetary CME (ICME) contribution. As flux carried by ejecta can only contribute to the heliospheric flux budget while it remains closed, the ICME flux opening rate is an important factor. Two separate forms for th...

Characteristic magnetic field and speed properties of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and their sheath regions

[1] Prediction of the solar wind conditions in near-Earth space, arising from both quasi-steady and transient structures, is essential for space weather forecasting. To achieve forecast lead times of a day or more, such predictions must be made on the basis of remote solar observations. A number of empirical prediction schemes have been proposed to forecast the transit time and speed of coronal...

Decay of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and Forbush decrease recovery times

[1] We investigate the relation between Forbush cosmic ray decrease recovery time and coronal mass ejection transit time between the Sun and Earth. We identify 17 Forbush decreases from ground-based neutron count rates between 1978 and 2003 that occur during the same phase in the solar cycle and can be associated with single coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the SOHO LASCO CME Catalog or previou...

STEREO observations of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and prominence deflection during solar minimum period

In this paper we study the occurrence rate and solar origin of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using data from the two Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory (STEREO) and the Wind spacecraft. We perform a statistical survey of ICMEs during the late declining phase of solar cycle 23. Observations by multiple, well-separated spacecraft show that even at the time of extremely weak so...
